There are two questions everybody has before booking a household job, and the internet only answers one of them. Cost is everywhere. Duration is scattered across the blogs of individual cleaning and gutter companies, each answering only for their own trade.
It matters more than it sounds. Duration is what tells you whether to take a morning off, whether the kids need to be elsewhere, whether you can realistically stack three jobs into one Saturday, and whether an hourly quote is a good deal or an open check.

These exclude travel and any time spent collecting materials. Anything requiring an ordered part becomes two visits regardless of how quick the work itself is.
On-site time is not the same as back-in-use time
This is the distinction that catches people out, and it is the reason a job that "only takes a day" can cost you a weekend.
Painting is the clearest example. A room is painted in a day, touch dry within hours, and fine to sleep in that night. But paint keeps curing for two to four weeks, which is why pushing a bookcase hard against a fresh wall in week one leaves a mark. Carpet cleaning is done in half an hour a room and then wants four to twelve hours of drying before you walk on it in shoes. Deck staining needs a day or two before the furniture goes back. Drywall repair is barely an hour of actual work spread across two or three visits, because each coat has to dry before the next.
When you are planning, the number you want is not "how long will you be here." It is "when can I use the room normally again." Ask that one instead, and diaries stop colliding.
The five things that make a job run long
- Access. Parking distance, stairs, narrow gates, a locked side return. Carrying tools and debris forty yards each way turns a two-hour job into three.
- Condition. Gutters cleaned last year take a fraction of the time of gutters last cleaned in 2019. The same holds for grout, ovens and decks. Neglect is measured in hours.
- Prep and protection. Furniture to move, floors to sheet, plants to cover. On some jobs this is a third of the time on site, which is exactly why the same work is cheaper in an empty house.
- Surprises. Everything hidden behind a panel. Rot under the decking board, a pipe where nobody expected one. Not the local's fault and not usually in the quote.
- One person doing a two-person job. Some work does not halve with a second pair of hands; it collapses. Anything long, heavy or awkward overhead is faster and safer with two.
Four of those five are visible before anyone turns up. Photographs attached to your job description are the single most effective way to get a quote and a time estimate that survive contact with reality.
Jobs that surprise people, in both directions
Longer than expected:
- Deep cleaning — people budget for a regular clean and get a job three times the length
- Drywall repair — minutes of work stretched across days of drying
- Exterior painting — days rather than hours, and weather-dependent throughout
- Furniture assembly — flat-pack wardrobes and bunk beds run far past the box estimate
Shorter than expected:
- Gutter cleaning — often under an hour on a single-story home
- TV mounting — usually an hour, including tidying the cables
- Junk removal — loading is fast; people budget for a whole day
- Snow clearing — a drive and path is typically under an hour

What duration should change about your quote
Once you know roughly how long something takes, an hourly rate stops being an abstract number and starts being a total you can check.
- Fixed price suits defined jobs. Gutters, a room of paint, a deep clean, a junk load. The scope is visible, so the risk of it running long sits with the person best placed to judge it.
- Hourly suits open-ended jobs. Chasing a leak, a list of unrelated small repairs, anything where the first hour determines the next three. Fixed-pricing those means padding, and you pay for the padding.
- If a defined job is quoted hourly, ask for the estimated total. A local who does this work weekly will know within an hour. Reluctance to estimate is worth noticing.
- Compare totals, not rates. Someone at a higher hourly rate who finishes in two hours beats a cheaper rate that takes five. The rate is not the price.
- Watch minimum call-outs on short jobs. Many locals have a one or two hour minimum, so bundling three small tasks into one visit is usually better value than booking them separately.

Doing it yourself typically takes two to three hours on an average home, mostly because of ladder repositioning. The house footprint matters less than the number of stories and how long it has been since the last clean.
How long does it take to paint a room?
A standard 12 by 12 bedroom takes about four to eight hours including prep, cutting in, two coats and cleanup. An experienced painter working in an empty room can be at the lower end. The paint is touch dry within hours and safe to live with the next day, but it continues curing for two to four weeks, which is why you should not scrub a fresh wall or push furniture hard against it straight away.
How long does a deep clean take?
Four hours for a small apartment, six to eight hours for a typical 1,000 to 2,000 square foot house, and ten hours or more above 2,500 square feet.
